The process of confirming the authenticity of a candidate's academic credentials — degrees, diplomas, and certificates — with the issuing institution.
Education verification is the process of independently confirming with the issuing educational institution that a candidate's claimed academic credentials are genuine and accurate. This includes verifying that the candidate was enrolled, that they completed the programme, that the degree or diploma was actually awarded, and that the marks, CGPA, and year of completion match the candidate's claims.
In India, education verification is conducted with universities (by contacting the Registrar's Office or Examination Department), schools, and vocational training institutes. Digital verification options include DigiLocker, the National Academic Depository (NAD), and university-specific online verification portals.
Education discrepancies — including fake degrees, inflated marks, and credentials from fake universities — are found in approximately 15–20% of verification cases in India, making education verification one of the most important components of any BGV programme.
